Two Wheels Are Better Than Four

Boulder. Portland. Chicago. Minneapolis. Madison. Austin. San Francisco. DC.

What do these cities have in common? They’re some of the most bike-friendly cities in the USA.

Lots of recent polls and research have made a big deal of our generation ditching our cars. So why should you consider commuting on two wheels instead of four?

It’s economical. It’s environmentally conscious. It’s great exercise. And, in some cases, it’ll shorten your commute.

And, you can feel totally smug about it.

Many big cities now have bike-sharing programs. Chicago just acquired one this summer and, as a subscriber, I can say with confidence that it is awesome. It cut 15 minutes off my commute because I can bike the last mile or so instead of walk it. There’s a bike station at my train station and another one a block from my office.

Bike culture in big cities is fantastic, and more and more areas are starting to catch on. If you’re a cyclist, tell us about it in the comments or on Twitter.

And, I can’t write a post about cycling without telling you all to be safe out there. Wear a helmet, always signal, and don’t be a douche by riding on the sidewalk.
