Elevate Your Blogging Game in 4 Easy Steps

by Renee on April 22, 2014

20sb elevate your game

While I’ve dabbled on and off with blogging (as I’m sure most of us have) for the last 15 years, it’s only been in the last year and a half that I’ve started truly building my brand and craft with a long-term goal in mind. Being intentional has made all the difference and I’ve learned so much from the experience! If you’re at the crossroads, here are four things you can do and adjust right now to tighten up and focus your blog:

1. Play to your strengths.

Knowing, owning, and understanding your strengths as a blogger is just as important as any other skill or aspect of your blog. I’m pretty terrible at the photography on my blog. There are so many better photographer-bloggers out there. (In fact, you’re probably one of them!) My strengths are writing and understanding my niche. I use those to grow my blog and my readership by publishing well-written content and creating relationships with my readers and other similar bloggers.  I’m not saying that you should give up or not try to improve; instead, be proud of what you’re fantastic at. Make those skills the selling points of your blog.

2. Be real.

Don’t contribute to online noise. Be unique and be yourself. Don’t be afraid to talk about your failures and insecurities as well as your triumphs and celebrations. Most people enjoy reading a blog (and stick around to keep reading) when they know a real, live person is behind it. Be you, not who you think others want you to be.

3. Listen to your readers.

When I began blogging, I was doing it for me– to work through my fiance’s year-long deployment to Afghanistan. It was scary and I didn’t know many people who were going through the same thing. But after I began getting emails, tweets, and posts from other women going through exactly the same thing, I realized that I could use my experiences to help others– and that that’s what they wanted!  Recently, I published a 10 question survey for my readers. I asked them how they initially found me, what their favorite topics on the blog are, and if they had any suggestions or questions for me. The results were incredibly enlightening and are helping me shape what I publish on my blog.

4. Publish regularly.

Readers want to follow your blog, but if you publish sporadically, they can’t do that. (In addition, if you’re interested in monetizing your blog, you’ve got to be consistent. Brands won’t want to work with you if you rarely publish.) Create a posting schedule that works for you so that your readers always have fresh content to read! I publish Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but you might find it’s better to publish other days. Look at your reader stats and your schedule. What works for you?
