Featured Blogger Interview: Kyla

This month’s Featured Blogger is Kyla, from Kylaroma.  She was nice enough to answer a few questions for us!

I’ll ask you the same question my grandma asks me; Why blog?

I read blogs for a long time before I wrote my own, and when I started it was kind of like writing love letters, mailing them and having the mail man show up the next day going, “Oh these letters? and lighting them on fire on my front step. I was writing to gaping silence for a very long time, but I was really interested in learning to be a better story teller and in having something solid to look back on when I think about this time of my life. That’s always been what keeps me putting things out there, I’m a compulsive sharer, and am compulsively interested in other peoples lives.

What was that one moment when you thought; I am SO glad I blog!

When I was working at my last job and my supervisor started really getting abusive. The first time she swore at me I remember feeling like, while it was awful, I knew I could check my e-mail and I would have comments from amazing, supportive people, and I could “hear” from them real time on Twitter too.

What was the one moment when you thought; I’m starting to doubt this.

Ugh, that would have definitely been on my old blog. I started getting really weird, hyper-personal comments from a male reader. He ended up going through facebook pictures of girls my age in my city until he found my picture & real name, then googled me and started e-mailing me at work and through my professional portfolio about wanting to meet up and come to the prairies to visit me. That was the main reason I took my old blog down….but I couldn’t stay away. I relaunched and was a lot more careful this time around- that’s why there’s no reference to my home city on my blog anymore, though I do talk about it on Twitter.

You are on a desert island with a coconut, a paring knife, a blue sharpie, and a monkey that only can speak French. What do you do?
Well, I speak as much French as a kid in grade 3 so it sounds like a party to me!!!

Quick! Take a picture of your shoes that you are wearing right now! Post it and tell me anything interesting about them.

I’m indoors! I’m not wearing shoes!! Is that an American thing? lol Hang on, let me grab the closest pair…

heelsYou decided to become a singer, what’s your stage name?

The Andrea McQuade Experience. Because if there’s anyone’s coat tails I want to hold onto, it’s hers!

You are a Canadian blogger, what’s the big difference that you run into between you & US bloggers?

I don’t think there are a lot of differences between the people, but the biggest thing is that because of your political climate down there (at the moment) I’m now at 10000 times increased risk of being called a socialist than the US bloggers I know. But you know what? Socialism is delicious. Being debt free makes everything taste like maple syrup and beer. It’s magic.

You are one of the few married bloggers on 20sb.net, does that change the way you blog?

I don’t think so, after some friend drama when I first started blogging I figured out that writing about the people in my life was mostly interesting only to me, and mostly an intrusion for them. I don’t really write about my friends and I’ve never written a “This Is My Husband” or “How we met” post so far. My marriage is a huge part of my life, but I think writing around it and giving snippets here and there is far more interesting than dragging Mister out onto a stage all the time. He likes being a semi-shadowy figure on the internet- it adds to his mystique!

Thanks for the time, Kyla!

I think the shoes thing depends on where you live! I grew up in Memphis and in the south NO ONE takes their shoes off upon entering a house. Here in Minnesota? EVERYONE does. I think it has something to do with the snow in the winter and tracking in dirt and all that, so when we're inside NO SHOES. It's probs the same up in your part of the woods. That's my guess anyway. :) OH. And I adore you and can't wait til you make your way back to my part of the world next month ;)

Yay Kyla! You are the coolest Canadian ever! I definitely think you deserve the feature, your posts are always so meaningful in a way that few writers can truly attain.

Yep not wearing shoes inside is totally an American/Canadian thing. EVERYONE in Australia wears their shoes inside and it DRIVES ME CRAZY. Mostly because it makes my house so messy. And because I still impulsively take my shoes off everywhere, and thus always have dirty feet/socks. I hate having to constantly vacuume but I can't exactly institute a "no shoes" policy in my own house because no one would obey it! I just wear slippers inside instead.
