We Asked/You Said: Responding to comments

by Renee on February 17, 2012

We’re starting a new series here on TwentyTwenty where we recap YOUR great responses to our questions!

Yesterday, we asked:

What’s your preference, bloggers responding to comments via email, or through the comment thread on the blog? What do you do?

Here’s what you told us via Facebook:

And here’s what we heard on Twitter:

It sounds like commenting on the thread is most popular, and cultivates dialogue. But do bloggers go back and check where they have commented?

Let’s continue this discussion in the comments!

If you have wordpress, you can have all your comments e-mailed to you. When you respond to them, include the e-mail of the person who commented. That way they get an email with your response AND it gets posted in the comments on the blog. Win, win.

For me it depends on the subject matter. Most of the time I'll reply through the comment thread, but if it's a sensitive subject, or I know that I can go on for paragraphs, I'll send it in an email instead.

Some don't, which is why I installed Comment Reply Notification on my Wordpress blog. It sends out an email when I/someone else replies to them and lets them know to come back to the blog to reply. With comment subscriptions, you get a notification for every. single. comment. on that post, so this plugin only lets you know of replies to YOUR comment.

I use Delicious bookmarking to bookmark posts where I've left comments, so I can go back and check. I know not everyone does this, but I do have a note on my blog's comment box that I respond to most comments, so they should check back later.
