Speak Out Against Bullying

by Jennifer Beese on October 12, 2012

Did you know that bullying (verbally and physically) is the most common form of violence in schools? It’s estimated that 160,000 students miss school every day because of it. The sad reality is that bullying isn’t just limited to the school yard; it continues on not only online (cyber bullying), but through adulthood as well.

As bloggers, many of us have dealt with uncouth or damn-right mean commenters. The Blogosphere is no stranger to drama, and anonymity only fuels the attacks. But as bloggers, we also know of the kindness and support that the Blogosphere can provide.

October is National Anti-Bullying Month, and we want to speak out against bullying — online and off — to show those affected that it does get better and that we support them.

This month’s event doesn’t have a sponsor or prize for participating. Instead, we’re asking you to post a vlog (or blog post if you’re not up for the face time) about a time you were bullied, tips for dealing with a bully, or maybe lessons you’ve learned from being a bully.

Publish your vlog or blog starting today through October 24th, and leave a link to it in the comments below. If you’re tweeting, use the hashtag #stopbullying. Also, feel free to extend the invitation to your readers as well. On the 24th, we’ll begin compiling highlights from videos, which will be shared at the end of October.
